PEMF for Low Back Pain: A Pilot Study

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, low back pain is the most common cause of job-related disability. At least 80 percent of Americans experience low back pain at some point in their lives.

PEMF therapy can stimulate various intracellular functions and increase cell membrane permeability, which brings therapeutic benefits such as relieving pain, accelerating the healing process, reducing inflammation, and improving blood circulation. Nowadays, PEMF therapy has been widely used in managing low back pain and attracted more researchers in discovering the potential of this technology.

In this blog, we will introduce a pilot study conducted by researchers at Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University in 2019. The study evaluated the short-term impact of PEMF therapy on the treatment of low back pain.

The Study

Anyone can have low back pain, but office workers may be more likely to suffer from the condition because most of them work in front of computers for a long time with unhealthy postures. In the study conducted by researchers at Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University, it involved 42 office workers, with ages ranging from 35 to 55 years.

They were all diagnosed with non-specific low back pain that lasted for a minimum of six months before joining the study. In addition, they did not accept any pain management such as physical therapy interventions, injection, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the last three months and during the study procedures.

The participants were divided into two groups. 21 patients in Group A received PEMF therapy and the others in Group B received sham treatment. The treatment results for individual participants were measured according to the numerical rating scale, Modified Oswestry LBP Disability Score, Modified Schober test, and the Short Form-36 questionnaire. Evaluations were performed for patients in both groups before and after finishing treatment.

Study Result

All the treatment outcomes were significantly improved in the PEMF group. On the other hand, there were no significant differences for participants in the sham group.

According to the data analysis, patients in the PEMF therapy group experienced a greater improvement in the symptoms of non-specific low back pain compared with patients in the sham group. These results were exciting because they shine a new future for the treatment of low back pain.

PEMF Device Recommendation

Based on the results of this research, we would recommend using a PEMF device daily to relieve pain, increase back mobility, reduce disability and improve quality of life. MiraMate Big Magic is a popular PEMF device for low back pain. It comes with a comfortable mat and has been optimized for long-term treatments. It gently applies a single, gentle and healing frequency called Schumann resonance, which is the natural frequency of the earth. The pulsed electromagnetic fields in Big Magic will message your body in the right direction so your low back can heal naturally in the long term.
